Butt Log Blog
This is the latest email I received from my older brother, Ben. He works for a huge forestry company in the country of Texas.
Sounds like he is doing some extremely important work. Here’s what’s going on…
(Ben)
I’m doing a project for work and had to look up something in an old forestry manual. I found something interesting that would probably come in handy someday:
Butt Logs
“It should be emphasized that, if used to scale butt logs, table D-1 will overestimate volume because butt flare exaggerates large end diameter. If this table is to be used for butt logs, diameter should be measured inside the flare (visually project taper through the butt flare and measure diameter as if flare was removed). An alternative procedure is to measure large-end diameters outside the butt flare and use a special butt log equation to compute log volume. See Bruce’s butt log equation (formula 4).”
(I guess everything really is bigger in Texas)

There’s nothing like a little flare to brighten the atmosphere
